Information Taken From: The SIDS Network of Kansas

Place a baby…

  • Alone in a safety approved crib
  • Back to sleep for naptime and nighttime
  • In a smoke-free, well-ventilated room
  • The safest place for a baby to sleep is in a room where others sleep, but not in a shared bed.
  • Remove all soft, fluffy bedding and toys from the sleep area.
  • Keep baby’s room at a comfortable temperature – not too hot.
  • Consider using a wearable blanket to avoid loose blankets in the sleep area.
  • Breast feed, if possible.
  • Provide “Tummy Time” when the baby is awake and supervised to help strengthen neck muscles and avoid flat spots on the head.
  • Consider offering a pacifier at naptime and nighttime after one month of age.
  • Share this information with everyone who cares for baby.
